Every August it’s the same story. Neck pain from hours of screen time. Shoulder strain from a backpack packed heavier than it should be (yes, even a science binder counts). Kids sit through long school days and their low backs get tight. Headaches follow, usually a mix of posture and the stress of a new routine. Add fall sports practices ramping up and overuse injuries aren’t far behind.
We see this with kids of all ages, but especially middle and high schoolers. Why? Between school, sports, and screens, they rarely build in time for recovery or real range of motion. Tight muscles don’t stay isolated, either. One restricted area starts pulling on the next.
At Advantage Chiropractic, Dr. Alex Babcock often notices this pattern once school starts. Recovery and range-of-motion work can fall by the wayside. Muscles tighten, movement becomes restricted, and one problem can begin affecting another. Catching those changes early can help kids keep moving well throughout the school year.
The Backpack Mistake Most Parents Make
Parents often pick a backpack for how it looks, not how it fits, and that tradeoff shows up in posture within weeks. Worth checking:
- The backpack should be no larger than your child’s torso
- Total weight should stay around 10 to 15 percent of their body weight
- It should sit above the waist, not sag toward the hips
- Width should stay within the ribs, not bulge out to the sides
One Family, Many Reasons to Stay Aligned
One of our patients, a teacher, lives at a fast pace. Chiropractic has become part of how she keeps up, through long school days, shifting schedules, and everything family life throws at her. Eventually she brought her kids in too.
Her son loves reading. The hours hunched over books, though, were taking a toll on his posture, so chiropractic became part of his routine as well. Her daughter barely sits still. Sports, school activities, nonstop energy. Regular visits have become part of how the family prioritizes movement and wellness through busy days. Staying aligned isn’t a habit for this family so much as how they stay healthy and ready for whatever comes next.
Stretches to Get Ahead of the Year
A handful of stretches can undo a lot of daily wear before it builds up: child’s pose, a side to side neck stretch, a doorway chest stretch, cat cow, the figure 4. In the office, full spine adjustments cover the areas back to school life tends to hit hardest. Neck, for screen time. Mid back, for posture and backpacks. Low back and SI joint, for sitting and sports.
When to Bring Your Child In
Ideally, before the season ramps up. That gives us a baseline and starts the year off well aligned. After that, trust your instincts. Uneven posture, a limp, soreness that won’t quit, a kid mentioning headaches out of nowhere, or other discomfort that keeps coming back. Any of that is worth a look rather than a wait and see.
A Fresh Start for the Whole Family
The conversation at our front desk is shifting with the season too, toward supporting the immune system and helping the body adapt as routines change. We’re offering a back-to-school wellness special for $45 (no X-rays needed) to make that easier.
Teachers can get in on the back-to-school reset too. Dr. Alex is offering a free 5-minute chair massage using a massage gun, plus a quick subluxation check, contact our office for more details.
